DECEMBER/JANUARY 2013 ISSUE
|
|
|
| FROM THE EDITOR |
As we went to press with the December/January 2013 issue, Yvette and I began to reminisce about the last 21 years. Good wine and good music and better conversations evolved into infinite possibilities with our friend Silvio, and what began as a fun magazine published to represent the Latin music heroes that we grew up listening to in New York City eventually consumed our lives and became a lifelong passion. Yvette was able to display her unique artwork and I was able to unite with an amazing group of writers, musicologists, and photographers who month after month and year after year entertained and informed music lovers and curious readers.
The year was 1990, six months before we published the first issue of Latin Beat Magazine in 1991, so the music industry had not yet experienced the new music model that would see the demise of record labels and an industry that was built on greed. I will not go into what many reasons caused their decline in the mid-'90s into the 21st century. Fait acompli. We were eager and excited, while being very aware that we were a niche, an indie rag, an outsider in the mainstream publishing world, and we hardly cared; we were unafraid.
Three months into publishing our one-color little glossy magazine, we called Russ Solomon in northern California and asked if he could carry Latin Beat Magazine in his Tower Record Stores. We were fearless. He received a copy and thus began our first distribution deal. We are forever grateful to him.
During the last two decades, we covered artists old and new, established and upcoming, mid-career and failing. Some of our iconic Latin musicians were still alive and we wrote about them, and those that had passed were written about by Latin Beat writers that had personally experienced those glorious eras and their musical geniuses. We still miss scribes Silvio Alava, Dr. Vernon Boggs and the inimitable Max Salazar. For two decades, Luis Tamargo, Elmer Gonzalez, Nelson Rodriguez, Chuy Varela, Vicki Sola and countless worldwide contributors delivered their passion and expertise through day jobs and life's myriad challenges. We are forever grateful.
We welcomed the digital upheaval, not the piracy. We battled for salsa, Latin jazz, Cuban musicians from Cuba, and public radio, our heroes. We stood up to record label giants, commercial radio and NARAS. 208 issues later, Latin Beat is still the indie magazine that fights the good fight, 100% digital and a little wiser for the knowledge, experience and exposure we have gained of the most wonderful music on the planet. We thank you for finding us online, friending us on Facebook and humorously still calling us to request a printed hardcopy of the magazine. Throughout the years, we have never engaged in online gossiping and digital infighting, we have quietly reported and entertained in a respectful manner. We thank our writers and contributors, our advertisers, and most of all, Rob Bernberg, our counsel and friend. We are humbled and indebted.
Please check out the 2012 Top Ten listings and embrace the new year with much love and peace.

OBITUARY
|
Francisco "Paquito" Hechavarría
(Cárdenas, 1939 - California, 2012)
|
—Luis Tamargo

| Barranquijazz: Ventana Al Mundo Del Jazz |
| Por Elmer González |
 |

| A Recap of Latin Beat Music Year 2012 |
| By Nelson Rodríguez |
 |
Once again, Latin jazz and salsa recordings topped over 100 new releases with many new names joining the ranks of veterans and current recording regulars. Many claim that salsa is dead, but it may very well be that its sales and exposure are negatively affected by its lack of access to commercial radio. Despite such lack of airplay, there are more and more artists surfacing with new salsa recordings, re-issues, compilations, etc. The Internet has become the fundamental way in which artists connect with nightclub DJs and non-commercial radio programs.
The following names are some of the salsa and Latin jazz acts that remain active through their new discography: Don Perignon y La Puertorriqueña, Ralph Irizarry, Los Van Van, Pupy y Los Que Son Son, Rubén Blades (with Cheo Feliciano), La Excelencia, Marlow Rosado & La Riqueña, Bloque 53, Rick Arroyo, Johnny Conga, Poncho Sánchez, Pete Escovedo, Ninety Miles, Juan Carlos Formell, Rick Davies, Víctor Manuelle, Gilberto Santa Rosa, José Lugo & Guasábara Combo, Julito Alvarado's Del Sur al Norte, Manuel Valera & New Cuban Express, Arturo O'Farrill, Chembo Corniel, Mike Freeman's Zona Vibe, Johnny Cruz, Septeto Santiaguero, Chino Ramos, La Misma Gente, Bobby Rivas, CharanSalsa, Nayibe La Gitana, Kat Parra, La Máxima, Joe Collado, Alberto Caicedo, Grupo Galé, Arturo Sandoval, Tumbao Bravo, Bailatino, Bobby Sanabria, Cheo Navarro, Edgar Nevárez & La Trópica, Roberto Rivera & La Solución, N'Klabe, Luisito Carrión, Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Café, Joel Díaz, Luis Enrique, Luisito Ayala & Puerto Rican Power, Juan José Hernandez & San Juan-Habana, La Negramenta, Ricky Campanelli, Manolín (El Medico De La Salsa), David Calzado & Charanga Habanera, Conjunto Clásico, Michel Batista, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Junior González, El Macabeo, Furito Rios, Chico Álvarez & Palomonte Afro-Cuban Big Band, Alex Díaz & Merengue-Jazz, Alberto Barros, Pedro Conga y La Internacional, Rumberos del Callejón, Arturo Stable & Elio Villafranca, Maelo Ruíz, Alexander Abreu's Habana de Primera, Tres de La Habana, Puchi Colón, and Maraca.
Other releases, featuring both newcomers and veterans, include the recordings issued by Eddie Montalvo, Candi Sosa & Víctor Cegarra, Charlie Donato's Son Ideal, Salsa Fuerte, Ralphy Santi, John Benítez, Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Alexis Valdés, The Brick City Salsa Orchestra, Grupo Arcano, Sonora Sanjuanera, Miguel García, Ed Byrne's Latin Jazz Evolution, Sonora Libre, Rica Obsesión, Tropa Son, Don Sonero, Lisett Morales, Sol, La Perla de Puerto Rico, Jimmy Urbina & Orquesta Revolución 70, Willy García, José Novoa, Jorge Villanueva & Zone Salsa, Suave Tumbao, PlayaSon de Cuba, Jorge Alberto (El Gallito del Son), Kongas Orchestra, Los Hacheros, Aguanile, Mambo Loco, Son de Barrio, Carlos Faroy, Chuti Serrano, Nelson Manuel & La Corte, Jaime Dubberly & Orquesta Dharma, Eric Rivera & La Clásica, Boricua Legends, Tromboranga, Carloscar Cepero & The New Talent Salsa, Nápoles, Son Yambú, Kamacho, Alfredo Rodríguez, Masalsa, Ken Davis & Ban Caribe, Alexis y su Sabor Habanero, Yturvides, Peter Vega & Mayagüez Big Band, José 'Juicy' Jusino, Kambalache Negro, Leo Wilber, Tito Guadalupe, Orlando Ortiz & Karibe Mambo, Arley y su Proyecto K-Libre, Boris & Los Amigos del Montuno, Tony Canales Con Klase, Alfredito Rivera, La Séptima Bohemia, Chacón y su Son, Yuliesky Gonzalez, UNC's Charanga Carolina, Salsamania, Ricardo Alvarez & Cubanísimo, Saint-Hill Colectivo, Leo Ramos & Convite Musical, etc.
It's probably impossible to indicate the total number of re-issues and "best of" compilations. The names that popped up this year include the likes of Alfredito Linares, Al Castellanos, Los Afroins, Cruz Control, Tito Puente, Creación 75, La Renovación, Pete Terrace, Eddy Martínez, Bobby Móntez, Alfredito Valdés & Charanga Popular, Armando Sánchez & Son de la Loma, Alfredito y su Orquesta, René Touzet, Al Escobar, Mon Carrillo y su Sexteto, Miguel-Oscar & La Fantasia, Orquesta Borinquen, and Los Hermanos Colón, just to name a few.
There are countless new recordings planned for 2013: New anniversary recordings, comebacks, plus projects that appeared this year as EPs and must be completed in 2013. In fact, I saw many more EPs (three to five track releases) this year than ever before (Michito Sánchez, Frankie Ruiz Jr., The Brick City Salsa Orchestra, etc.)
Radio needs to do more to support newer recordings. Newer acts need to do their homework and service all the U.S. non-commercial radio stations, as well as those abroad that judge music solely on quality. Forget commercial radio...it does not exist. You need to get the music to the many DJs/hosts who do this for the love of the music. Latin Beat has a list you can start with. By the way, MP3s do not work well at many small radio stations which lack the more efficient deck players...Invest in hard-copy CDs and send them to radio DJs in order to get the most effective results.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts continued its superb 32nd season with an exclusive NYC appearance by the 75-member NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF CUBA, as part of its premiere, 21-city tour of the United States from October 16 to November 11.
|
 |
|
Lehman Center proudly presented this Cuban national treasure on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 8pm. The orchestra's Music Director is Enrique Pérez Mesa.
|
 |
| The concert featured guest conductor Guido López-Gavilán leading the Orchestra in George Gershwin's "Cuban Overture" and "Rhapsody in Blue," with piano soloist Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera. The Orchestra also performed such internationally known works as Ernesto Lecuona's "Malagueña." The program concluded with Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5". |
 |
| The National Orchestra of Cuba, which began in 1960 as the Havana Symphony, has been instrumental in developing and introducing Cuban and Latin American music to the international classical music community. In addition, the orchestra performs a vast symphonic and chamber repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. International tours have taken the orchestra to Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain, Peru and Argentina. |
 |
| Among the more than 100 guest conductors who have led the orchestra include Sir Thomas Beecham, Sergiu Celibidache, Pierre Monteaux, Charles Munch, Eugene Ormandy, Wilhelm Steinberg, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Bruno Walter. Acclaimed international soloists have included Marian Anderson, Claudio Arrau, Jorge Bolet, Jose Carreras, Jascha Heifetz, Nathan Milstein, Ruggiero Ricci, Mstislav Rostropovich Arthur Rubinstein, Andres Segovia and Isaac Stern. |
 |
| Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera, piano soloist, stunned Cuban audiences at the age of twelve, performing Rachmaninoff's "Concerto No. 2" with the Havana Symphony Orchestra. In the late 1990s, Nachito joined the famed ¡Cubanismo! as its lead pianist, arranger, and musical director, performing at many of the world's finest concert halls and prestigious festivals. In 2009, Herrera toured as a member of the Afro Cuban All Stars. His love of classical music quickly combined with traditional Cuban rhythms under the instruction of the Cuban masters-Rubén González, Jorge Gomez Labraña, and Frank Fernández. In his twenties, Nachito became the musical director at the famous Tropicana in Cuba, where he continued to deepen his repertoire. Text Source-Lehman Center |

| Tenth Annual Latin Grammy Street Parties |
| Text and Photos By Ricky Richardson |
 |
The 2012 Latin Grammy Street Parties have reached a major milestone, celebrating their 10th year. The tour began in grand style with an opening show in Chicago on September 30.
The popular street parties, also known as "tailgate parties", were a nice way to lead up to the XIII Annual Latin Grammy Awards Show telecast transmitted by Univision on Thursday, November 15th, at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
|
 |
The tour traveled to major Hispanic communities in the United States, with tour stops in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San José, and concluded the celebrations on November 4 in Miami. The Latin Grammy Street Parties showcased performances by some of Latin music's established artists, as well as up-and-coming acts that are generating plenty of media buzz in the music industry.
The Latin Grammy Street Parties featured a variety of Latin music genres such as reggaetón, regional Mexican, Latin pop, rock en español, tropical, and many others.
On Sunday, October 21, an overcast cool day greeted several thousand lovers of Latin muisc for the fourth stop of the Latin Grammy Street Parties at Los Angeles' Plaza Olvera - (right across from Union Station).
|
 |
The show kicked off with a set of reggaetón by Las Vegas' Ibiandi Marquetti (El International). This set was a great way to fire up the crowd via the tunes "El Termómetro," "Gata Romántica" and "Run Pipi."
The reggaetón introduction was followed by a tight cumbia set performed by Rocio y su Sonora that got the crowd dancing to "No Renunciaré", "La Cumbia", "Mi Cucú", and "Así me hizo Dios" (the title track from their latest CD).
Our musical journey continued to México, when El Rojo delighted the crowd with several original tunes, such as "Ingrata", "Perfecta Para Amarte", "Se Me Olvidó Otra Vez", and then turned up the heat on "Plaza Caliente."
|
 |
The young and talented vocalist Kevin Ortiz (known for creating positive waves and tearing up the current music charts) opened with "Tora Mamba". Ortiz graced the stage to perform "Tal Como Eres", "Un Momento", "Me Voy", and "Una Historia de Amor", to the delight of his screaming fans.
Jotdog (a group nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award in the Best Rock/Pop Album Category) performed various tracks from its new CD, such as "Lo Que Digo Yo", "Hasta Contar a Mil", "Lluvia de Estrellas", and "Corazón de Metal."

| Latin Beat Magazine's Radio Host Listing |
| By Nelson Rodríguez |
Today more than ever the future of the music that is constantly ignored by commercial radio is in the hands of independent and public radio DJs and radio hosts who defend and see the true value of all artists worldwide. Many of these radio hosts...some who have been on radio for well over 20 years...and the newer defenders of salsa and Latin jazz are the life line that give these recordings the exposure that is required.
We have become a multi-tasking society of radio hosts who also promote events, DJ at clubs, book artists/events, etc. While the average show is only one to three hours, when you add it all up it is a powerful media for artists looking to introduce themselves and expose their talent.
The following list contains some of the most innovative and best radio hosts in the world that live and breathe music solely for the love of the music and some of these very same hosts are pioneers in their respective areas. We will keep this list up till the end of the year and continue to add to it as the information reaches Latin Beat Magazine.

Studio Call-In (Live): 804-231-7685
Initially, the founder and host, "The Voice of Latin Jazz" Luis (Sweet Lou) Hidalgo, was interested in buying advertising time on a local radio station in the Richmond area for his family owned and operated company, and was asked to host a show by the owner. With no radio experience "under his belt,", but a substantial knowledge of Latin music, Mr Hidalgo decided to take on this new venture, and so The Latin Jazz Show was born and aired for the first time on April 6, 2005 on WCLM 1450 AM in the City of Richmond, Virginia. The show was an instant hit, and because of the limited radio broadcasts featuring Latin music in the Richmond/Tri-Cities area, continues to be a hit to this day. The staff of The Latin Jazz Show now consists of Host: Luis "Sweet Lou" Hidalgo, Co-Host: Miguelito "El Guiro" Lebron, Producers: Jimmy Castro and Willie "Don Pepin de La Salsa" Rodriguez, and Engineer: David Aponte, Sr.

WHCR 90.3 FM - The Voice of Harlem
ESSENCE & RHYTHM - Traditional Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz and Latin (Bilingual English/Spanish)
The Program Essence& Rhythm ("E&R") is a unique music program specializing in Latin American music and Afro Cuban Jazz broadcast. E&R educates a broad and diverse audience, thus helping to bridge ethnic and cultural divides. Essence & Rhythm was incepted on January 4, 1992 as a center to promote, explore and develop Latin American arts and culture by examining the folkloric traditions and modern tendencies of the music of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Nelson graduated from the "Center for the Media Arts" in radio and television production in 1990. During that year, he started to work on the radio as co-host of the show "Jazz Plus" Sundays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on WHCR 90.3 FM. This responsibility prompted him to start researching about the fusion of Jazz and Afro-Cuban music called today Latin-Jazz.
In January of 1992, he started his own Latin Jazz format show "Essence and Rhythm" as producer and host, which is still on the air at 90.3 fm WHCR Harlem Community Radio, every Saturday from 11am - 3pm. Also works as a substitute host at WBAI 99.3 FM Pacifica Radio show "New World Gallery".

Saturdays 12noon - 4pm EST
Her long-running radio program, that just turned 29 years on the air at Fairleigh Dickinson University, provides the New York metro community with salsa and Latin jazz produced by a singular mix of famous performers, plus artists rarely heard on commercial stations.
Featured on American Latino TV, a program hosted at the time by Daisy Fuentes, Solá has served as an advisor to the Smithsonian Institution, and her articles have appeared in internationally circulated trade periodicals such as Latin Beat Magazine, for which she writes the column "A Bite from the Apple." Solá recently published a novel, The Getaway That Got Away (Full Court Press), and is working on a sequel.

Latin Flavor: Classic Edition
6pm - 8pm
Programmed since 1996 from my private collection of 18,000+ of vintage Palladium-era recordings, a typical playlist ranges from Machito, La Playa Sextet, Arty Jenkins and Marcelino Guerra, to Perez Prado, Charlie Palmieri, Alfredito, Eddie Bonnemere and Hector Rivera. I also embrace mambo's impact on broader pop culture of the 1950s and 1960s, also explored in my blog: Mambo-phoniC. A former Latin-jazz critic for The Washington Post, in March, 2012, I begin season three of my Latin-jazz concert/lecture series for the Smithsonian Institution, Metro Mambo.
