Elmer Gonzales
One of Latin Beat's most prolific Caribbean connections is Elmer Gonzalez, professor of Appreciation for Afro-Caribbean Rhythms at the Sacred Heart University in Puerto Rico. Elmer loves this music so much it is hard to speak to him about little else; he breathes, feels and lives it constantly. In addition to teaching and contributing to Latin Beat, Elmer writes for the publications Claridad and El Vocero in San Juan, and for the magazine 91.9: La Revista Que Suena, in Bogota, Colombia.

As with the aforementioned veteran writers, Elmer has been invited to speak about jazz and Afro-Caribbean music at conferences and universities in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, France, Curaçao and Venezuela. In Latin Beat, his column and features often contain an editorial slant and directness towards the music industry. He is an intelligent and responsible journalist who has also been with the magazine from the beginning.
