Luis Tamargo
When one thinks of Latin jazz, North American jazz, Brazilian music and Cuban history, the words are synonymous with Luis Tamargo, an endless fountain of knowledge in these fields. A graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills, Luis brings his anecdotal wit and sharp-edged cynicism to Latin Beat Magazine every month through feature articles and interviews with international artists as well as little known local musicians. Based in Los Angeles, Luis has authored numerous monolingual and bilingual liner notes and promotional materials for a wide range of Latin and Latin jazz recordings issued by various diverse North American and European labels including EMI-Capitol, Columbia House, World Pacific, and Heads Up. He served as music critic for La Opinion, the largest U.S. Spanish-language daily from 1985-91. He has translated Latin jazz artist Paquito D'Rivera's autobiography, My Sax Life; authored a 14-page bilingual Caribbean music essay for the 3-CD box compilation Caribe, Canto y Pasion, and authored a 16-page English language biography of Latin jazz artist Mongo Santamaria for Skin On Skin: The Mongo Santamaria Anthology, 1958-1995 for Rhino Records. Luis pulls no strings and tells it like it is. Puff pieces are not what he seeks. His writing is always a good read, and his reviews and features for Latin Beat Magazine generate plenty of reader response and controversy.
